比較級を用いた慣用表現

比較級を用いた慣用表現には次のようなものがある。

The 比較級 ～, the 比較級 ･･･：～すればするほど、ますます･･･

• The more the teacher talked, the less she understood.

  • 先生が話せば話すほど、彼女はますます訳が分からなくなった。

• Generally speaking, the older you become, the weaker memory you have.

  • 一般的に、年齢を重ねれば重ねるほど記憶力は弱まるものだ。

know better than to do：～する以上の分別がある

• He knows better than to say such a thing.
  • 彼はそんなことを言うほど馬鹿ではない。

than以下が明白な場合は省略することもある。

• You should know better (than that).
  • 君はもっと分別を持つべきだ。

＜no more than ～＞の表現

＜no more than ～＞は、数量の少なさや程度の低さを強調する表現で、

＜no less than ～＞

反対に＜no less than ～＞は、lessをnoで否定することで、数量の多さや程度の高さを強調する表現である。

• The boy has no less than 5000 yen.
  • その少年は5000円しか持っていない。

＜no less than～＞は＜as much [many] as ～＞で書き換えることができる。

• I have as much as 5000 yen now.

＜no more ～ than＞の表現
