ought toの用法

基本的にはshouldの表す意味と同じである。

当然の義務：～するべきである

• You ought to think twice before you say something important.

  • 何か大切なことを言うときは、その前に二度（よく）考えるべきだ。

• We ought not to neglect overweight in a child.

  • 子供の太りすぎを軽視すべきではない。
    • ＜ought to＋完了形＞で「～するべきではなかったのに＜実際はした＞」を表す。

当然の推量：～のはずである

• She ought to be at home, because she said she is off duty today.
  • 彼女は家にいるはずだよ。今日は休みだと言ってたから。
    • ＜ought to＋完了形＞で「～したはずだ」という過去の推量を表す。
